Effect of Maternal Anaemia on APGAR Score of Newborn

چکیده
Background: To study the effect of maternal anaemia on APGAR score of newborn and to compare it with that of non-anaemic mothers. Methods: In this cross sectional study 100 subjects were divided into two groups; each containing 50 subjects on the basis of consecutive non probability sampling . Group A included 50 anaemic pregnant women (haemoglobin < 11.0 g/dl) and group B 50 non-anaemic(haemoglobin >11.0 g/dl) pregnant women. In APGAR scoring five factors (which Apgar stands for) were used to calculate the baby’s condition and each scored on a scale of 0 to 2, with 2 being the best score.A baby who scored 8 or above was considered in good health and a score of less than 8 was considered low. Data was compared using t-test at a confidence level of 95%. Frequencies were calculated for categorical data. These were compared using chi-square test, and p<0.05 was statistically significant. Results: Difference between the two groups was found to be statistically very significant (p<0.003)in this variable also, as 16 out of 50 babies delivered to mothers in the anemic group showed a low APGAR at one minute as against 04 out of 50 in the babies delivered to the mothers in the non anemic group .Difference between the two groups was found to be statistically significant (p<0.012) . Twelve out of 50 babies delivered to mothers in the anemic group in our study showed a low APGAR at five minutes as against 03 out of 50 in the babies delivered to the mothers in the non anemic group. The number of anemic mothers who showed a low APGAR score of their infants were more at both one (32%) and five minutes (24%) as compared to the non anemic group (08% and 06% respectively), with a statistically highly significant difference of these two variables (p<0.003 and p<0.01 respectively) between the two groups. Conclusion: There was a linear relationship of maternal anaemia in pregnancy with greater probability of low APGAR score at one and five

The Effect of Pregnancy Induced Hypertension on Complete Blood Count of Newborn
Background: Pregnancy induced hypertension is one of the most common causes of maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity. New born delivered to mothers with hypertension are more liable for intrauterine growth retardation and may be delivered prematurely. We aimed to determine the effect of pregnancy-induced hypertension on complete blood count, gestational age and birth weight of newborn...

Introduction: Newborns should be evaluated immediately after birth and the traditional way of assessing is to use the Apgar score. The aim of this study was to estimate the Apgar score and evaluate the first 24 hour- clinical outcome of babies born at Yazd hospitals. Methods: In a descriptive cross-sectional study, Apgar score was assessed for 462 newborns at the 4 centers of Afshar, Madar, Ka...
متن کاملIs Epidural Analgesia a Predictor of Low Newborn Apgar? A Hospital-Based Observational Study
A painful labor induces adverse maternal effects and increases fetal stress, yet evidence of lack of adverse effect of epidural anesthesia to the newborn Apgar score has been inconsistent. The aim of this study was to investigate maternal, newborn and anesthetic factors associated with a low Apgar score, in particular the effect of modality and timing of epidural analgesia, since this may allow...
متن کاملMaternal anaemia and its impact on perinatal outcome.
OBJECTIVE To find out the relationship between maternal anaemia and perinatal morbidity and mortality. METHOD A cohort of 629 pregnant women was studied from October 2001 to October 2002. Of these, 313 were anaemic (haemoglobin <11 g/dl in labour and on two previous occasions in current pregnancy). A total of 316 women had haemoglobin >11 g/dl at all times in pregnancy and were labelled as no...
متن کاملThe effect of low dose fentanyl as a premedication before induc-tion of general anesthesia on the neonatal apgar score in cesarean section delivery: randomized, double-blind controlled trial
Background: The administration of opioids before induction of general anesthesia can be considered as a problem in cesarean section. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of intravenous Fentanyl as a premedication before induction of general anesthesia versus placebo on maternal hemodynamic parameters and on the first and fifth minutes Apgar score in the neonates in elective cesarean...
